The Racialized "Other"

1. I will no longer be made to feel ashamed of existing.

2. The term "people of color," though often useful in describing contemporary social reality, is itself tied to the tradition of racism. Through it White people are set apart -- described as pure and deracinated -- separate from and above the majority of the people of the world -- all those colorful "others."

3.

4. Racism is a vicious poison.

 5.

6. This development culminated in genocide in the Second World War, when the Nazi’s killed six million Jews and at least two hundred thousand Gypsies in gas chambers.

7. …just because we don’t face the racism of the past doesn’t mean we’ve solved the problem. We haven’t.

8.

9. It is the fault in man; the belief that one human is better than another for arbitrary reasons, that perpetuates racism, classicism and widespread injustice.

 10.

11. “Hey, Mex…I don’t like Mexicans because they steal. You hear me?"

 “Yes.’”

12.

13. The Anglo-Texan myth emphasizes that the “problem” with the Mexican is an inherent, genetic quality. This is a terrible misnomer that gives the oppressors a justification for their hatred.

14. “If you want to be American, speak ‘American’. If you don’t like it, go back to Mexico where you belong.”

15.

16. Hadn’t I understood…responsibilities. Besides, he could never marry me. You didn’t think…? Never marry a Mexican. Never marry a Mexican…No, of course not. I see. I see.

17. Set these Pachucos free and you shall unleash the forces of anarchy and destruction in our society.

18.

19. Why us, burrowed in the dirt like animals with no hope for anything? You know the only hope we have is coming out here every year. And like you yourself say, only death brings us rest.

20. Power will make people to do crazy things, to say the least.

21.

22. A national survey published in the journal Social Forces in 2007 found that 15% of Americans believe that blacks "pose a greater threat to public safety than other groups."

23.  The purpose of this Mash Up is to shed light on the idea of racism, and the racialized “other”. With a mixture of quotes from Chican@ literature, photos, original ideas, and quotes from articles I have created a new composite to depict the atrocities of racism. The social construct of Racism is poisonous and unjust. The above stated images and words serve as powerful reminders of the cruelty and extreme prejudice existent in both historic and contemporary America.
